CHAMP IS IN THE HOUSE!!!

As you can probably tell from the title, Tia finally took a rest and let her proud husband take a turn blogging.

This is a picture of Champ, I mean Grant when he was about 2 minutes old. Isn't he cute? He was born at 2:01 am on Wednesday morning, October 24th. He was 7 lbs 8 oz and was 19.5 inches long. You can tell that he was a little purple. He was having a hard time breathing and his oxygen saturation levels were really low.

Unfortunately Tia only got to see him for about half a minute before he and I were carted off to the Nursery (actually only he was carted, I walked under my own power.) When we got there he was placed in an oxygen tent but was still unable to get his oxygen saturation levels to an acceptable range. That's why he got put on this crazy machine.

I can't remember the machine's actual name but I think its Tranformer code name was "Oxygenator". It was a real blessing that "Oxygenator" was there as this is a very new piece of equipment to American Fork Hospital. Without this machine Champ would have got to enjoy an ambulance ride to Utah Valley Children's Hospital in Orem. However, after being on this for a while his oxygen saturation started looking a lot better but when they took him off the machine he was still struggling to maintain these levels on his own. I felt so bad for him. He was trying so hard but couldn't quite do it, and his reward for his efforts was getting stuck with needles about 10 times. Through the whole thing he was a real champ and never cried. I think partially because he couldn't really cry. He was borderline on his oxygen levels for a while and it looked like he may be spending some extra time in the oxygen tent but finally at 5:30 they tried this new medical procedure called giving him a sponge bath, and this was the real key to getting him on the road to recovery. I learned that you can poke and prod him with needles but don't try giving him a bath unless you want him to get really ticked off. He finally screamed and cried and after that he was able to breathe well on his own. And by 6:00 in the morning I was finally able to rejoin Tia for what I considered to be some well earned rest.

Enjoy a few pictures of our new baby boy!

Oh my word he is so cute. I think he is destined to be a toe head.
I am glad he is okay. Laura was born in AF and had to take that wonderful ambulance ride to Utah Valley and it was awful! Take it easy and try your best to heal!

Hey guys, congrats on your new addition! I noticed your link on the Caldwell's blog, and enjoyed catching up with you. I'm so happy for you and your little "champ." :) Some coincidences: Aaron and I took hypnobirthing and birthed Abe in AF Hospital also! Did you go to Mt. Timp Women's Health Care Nurse-Midwives too? How was your experience?
